Corrugated cardboard boxes offer numerous advantages: their design provides sufficient strength, flexibility, and excellent sealing properties, making them suitable for containerized packaging and empty storage. Their smooth surface, beautifully printed, and clearly visible labeling facilitate information transmission. Furthermore, recycling conserves resources.
Characteristics of corrugated boxes
Corrugated boxes are made of corrugated cardboard and are the most widely used paper packaging containers. Compared with traditional transport packaging, corrugated boxes have the following characteristics.
1.Adequate raw materials and low cost. There are many raw materials for corrugated cardboard, including leftover wood, bamboo, wheat straw, reeds, etc., and its cost is only about half of that of wooden boxes of the same volume. Corrugated cardboard is a hollow structure, which uses the least amount of material to form a rigid box.
2.Light weight, good structural performance, good cushioning and shock absorption performance, and good protection for packaged items.
3.The production of corrugated boxes can be highly mechanized and automated, and the packaging operation for products can also be mechanized and automated. Moreover, its specifications and sizes are easy to change, and it can quickly adapt to the packaging of various items, with a wide range of uses.
4.Convenient storage and transportation. Empty boxes can be folded or flattened for transportation and storage, which is convenient for loading and unloading, handling and stacking, saving effective space in transportation tools and warehouses, and improving their use efficiency.
5.Easy to print and decorate. Corrugated cardboard has good ink absorption ability and good printing and decoration effect.
6.Waste boxes are easy to recycle and reuse, which meets environmental protection requirements.
Basic forms of carton box structure
There are many types of cartons with different structural forms. According to the international carton box standard, the basic box type is generally represented by four digits, the first two digits represent the box type, and the last two digits represent different carton styles in the same box type. The basic forms of carton box structure are as follows:
The carton blank is cut from a page of cardboard and the joints are connected by stapling, adhesive or adhesive tape. It is flat during transportation and the upper and lower swing lids are sealed during use. This type of carton is the most widely used, especially the 0201 box, which can be used to package a variety of commodities and is called RSC box (regular slotted case) internationally.
It consists of two or more independent parts, that is, the box body and the box lid (sometimes also the box bottom) are separated. When the carton is placed upright, the top cover or bottom cover can cover the box body in whole or in part.
Usually made up of one page of cardboard, no need to staple or tape, even some boxes do not need adhesive, just fold to form, can also be designed with locks, handles and display boards and other structures.
Made up of several inner boxes or frames and outer boxes, the inner boxes and outer boxes move in relative directions. Some boxes of this type can be used as outer boxes of other types of cartons.
Made up of two separate end faces and a box body connecting the two end faces. Before use, the end faces and the box body are connected by staples, adhesives or adhesive tapes, and there are no separate upper and lower covers.
Only a small amount of bonding, just one page of cardboard is formed, transported in a flat shape, and when used, just open the box body to automatically fix and form. The structure is similar to a folding carton.
Including spacers, frames, liners, partitions, pads, etc. The periphery of the box-type paperboard and liner is not closed and placed inside the paper box, which strengthens the box wall and improves the reliability of the packaging. Spacers and frames are used to separate the packaged products and improve the strength of the box bottom.
Types of corrugated cardboard
Corrugated cardboard can be divided into the following types according to its material composition:
Only one side of the corrugated core paper is pasted with face paper. It is generally not used to make corrugated boxes, but as a cushioning material and fixing material.
Also known as single-wall corrugated cardboard, both sides of the corrugated core paper are pasted with face paper. This type of cardboard is currently used more.
Double-core double-sided corrugated cardboard
Abbreviated as double-corrugated cardboard, it is made of double-layer corrugated core paper and face paperboard, that is, it is made of a single-sided corrugated cardboard and a double-sided corrugated cardboard bonded together. In terms of structure, various fluting combinations can be used, such as AB, BC, AC, AA and other structures.
Different combinations have different performances. Generally, the outer layer uses a corrugated type with good puncture resistance, while the inner layer uses a corrugated type with high compressive strength. Since double-wall corrugated board is thicker than single-wall corrugated board, its performance in all aspects is relatively good, especially the vertical compressive strength is significantly improved.
Three-core double-sided corrugated board
Referred to as three-wall corrugated board, it is made of three layers of corrugated core paper, that is, it is made of a single-sided corrugated board and a double-wall corrugated board. In terms of structure, it can also use a combination of various corrugated types of A, B, C, and E, and AAB, AAC, CCB and BAE structures are commonly used. Its strength is stronger than double-wall corrugated board, and it can be used to pack heavy items instead of wooden boxes. It is generally used in conjunction with pallets or containers.
